Young Driver Insurance Guide
Young drivers’ insurance can look like an expensive option with
young drivers seen as high risk and therefore more likely to make an insurance claim. New
drivers will also be unable to bring along a No Claims Discount so their
premium will not feature any discounting.
Insurance policies
for young drivers are generated using a carefully compiled set of statistics
and insurers take any information that you provide to compare against similar
drivers in the same age group and gender. Unfortunately if these drivers have
generated a high volume of claims against them then new drivers in the same
bracket will also represent as a high risk. As this is the only source of
information from which the insurers can base their quote, the insurer generally
makes an assumption based on your age and the performance of your vehicle.
By proving you are a reliable driver over time your premiums will then start to
reduce year on year.

How do I save money on my young driver insurance?
Most new drivers pay their parents to be the second driver on the parent's car.
This is great when trying to reduce the overall cost of the monthly premiums
but means you will not necessarily have the freedom and convenience of your own
vehicle. Many insurers will also restrict whether they will permit you to build
up a no claim bonus whilst you are a secondary driver on the car insurance. Equally
some people buy a new car and ask their parents to name themselves as the main
driver, but this actually voids the policy with the insurer as it is
technically not true.
To reduce your monthly young drivers insurance we recommend the following:
Have an approved immobiliser and alarm fitted to your vehicle to decrease the
risk of vehicle theft.
Make sure that the car you choose is suitable. The higher the power and spec of
a car the higher the car
insurance will be, therefore make sure the car will suit your needs, don't
let your heart rule your head.
Reduce the amount of additional drivers on the policy to only those who will
need to frequently use the car.
Complete a Pass Plus course which will prove to the insurance company that
you are at reduced risk of being involved in an accident.
Let the insurer know you are willing to pay a higher excess charge if there is
an accident, in return for a lower premium. Offer to pay £500 excess instead of
the standard £250.
