Women's Car Insurance Guide

An ever increasing number of car insurance providers now specialise in providing low cost car insurance to female drivers. The simple fact is that women tend to have far less serious accidents (85% of serious road offences are committed by men) and generally only pick up cosmetic damage to the car rather than costly damage to its structure. Couple this with the fact that women generally drive slower and travel fewer miles - it means they have less opportunity to have an accident in the first place.

The result is that women submit fewer claims and the insurance companies end up paying out less money on claims for them. A female-only customer base is rather more cost-effective for the insurer who is able to lower the premiums for women drivers.

How much can I save?
That depends on your circumstances and the insurance company that you select, but we recommend that you compare providers before you buy insurance. There are quite a few firms that specialise in insuring women, some marketing themselves as for women only. Specialist women insurers are of course worth having a look at but don’t just assume they will be automatically cheaper or offering a better deal than other mainstream insurers.

Companies that specialise in car insurance for women drivers include Sheila’s’ Wheels, Diamond, Ladybird and Girl Motor.

There might be lots of special women ‘extra benefits’ but they could just be fluffy ad ons that you don’t really need or that should come as standard anyway. Things that are covered under women’s insurance are things like ‘handbag cover’, if you leave your handbag or possessions in a locked car which is then stolen you can claim, although it’s worth checking because you may be covered for things like that under your home insurance.

Generally speaking a number of insurers now offer 24 hour roadside cover as standard. Other things that may appeal are ‘women friendly garages’ that are open in the day time rather than the evening and counselling services if you have been in a crash.

When checking out comprehensive polices, that will give you full cover, look closely at what is actually being offered as part of the policy.

Are men excluded?

As a male driver you can take out a policy with Sheila's Wheels or another women only provider as you are actually not excluded, but to be honest you would be much better off going with another insurer. The insurer is really looking for a women-only base as this saves them money which can in turn be passed on to the female customers. If these insurers started offering low premiums to men as well then their overall policy prices would increase and they wouldn't be able to provide low quotes to their female customers.

In terms of car insurance premiums the biggest difference in prices for men and women are in the young driver insurance category, 17-21, where women’s insurance prices are considerably lower. Women’s insurance continues to be lower until prices level out more in the 35-40 age groups. Men’s prices start to be lower than women around the 55 and over group. However, if you would normally sit within a high-risk category, such as young drivers, then you will do better looking at specific insurers that provide appropriate cover but at a slightly higher cost.
