Build your own V12.
Wednesday, 25th June 2008
43 yr old Designer Yee Job from Canada built a 63cm long engine using Origami the Japanese paper folding art form originating from the 6th Century
Incredibly the model features moveable parts, including a crankshaft, a cooling fan, 12 rods and 12 pistons & includes 12 LED lights to simulate the spark plugs.
The Origami Engine weighs just 1.5kg, and is made up from a staggering 1978 individual pieces and runs on a pair of 1.5 volt, AA batteries
The goal of the Origami art is to create a representation of an object using geometric folds and crease patterns preferably without the use of gluing or cutting the paper, and using only one piece of square paper. Traditional Origami only uses a small number of different folds, which can be combined in a variety of ways to make intricate designs.
Some Pedants would argue that this is not ‘pure’ Origami – if you know any of these people we recommend not speaking to them.
For £80 you can get your own V12 engine kit which comes with 195 sheets of paper with printed patterns, a battery powered motor and a CD ROM with instructions on how to build it, and a 595 page instruction manual which includes more than 1,000 detailed pictures.
