An end to Wi-Fi hotspots?
Tuesday, 25th March 2008
Have wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) hotspots seen their hayday already? Some believe Wi-Fi hotspots will soon be relegated to the history of broadband development.
Speaking at the European Computer Audit Control and Security Conference in Stockholm this week, Johan Bergendahl, chief marketing officer of Ericsson, remarked on the progress of mobile broadband.
"Hotspots at places like Starbucks are becoming the telephone boxes of the broadband era," said Mr Bergendahl.
Issues such as the increasingly reduced prices of mobile broadband in countries such as Denmark and Sweden were commented upon, combined with the fact that many laptops now contain High Speed Packet Access capabilities.
However, he added that the future of broadband would require cooperation between mobile internet service providers to improve coverage.
The large players in the mobile arena have been developing technology to improve mobile broadband, utilising modules that may be included in more notebooks in the future.
So as we all get more wireless Internet capability from our mobile devices with broadband speeds the need to use Wi-Fi hotspots may decline.
