Handset Recycling

The majority of people in the UK have a mobile phone and with mobile operators looking to get you connected to a new deal most of us end up with a new mobile handset each time we change contracts. By 2009 it is expected that around 1 billion mobile handsets will be sold each year and at present around 90 million UK mobile phones are not in use and tend to live in drawers or hide out in people's junk boxes.

Now it may not be that easy to dispose of mobile handsets but the environmental implications of putting them into general waste is extremely damaging to the environment. YourHomeBills.com wants to help reduce the impact on the environment by asking you to recycle your old mobile handset.

What's in it for me?
Sending you mobile phone for recycling will usually net you a small amount of commission. YourHomeBills.com have partnered with envirofone.com, the UK 's number 1 online mobile phone recycling site.

What happens to my recycled mobile?
When you send your mobile phone to be recycled, the company collecting the phones will examine the phone and its component parts to check functionality. SIM cards will be removed and destroyed to meet data security regulations. Some mobile handsets will be reconditioned and sold elsewhere in the world, and some phones will have their parts recycled for use in other phones or electrical goods. The majority of phone parts are reusable but any that can't be salvaged will be sent for environmentally friendly disposal.

Why should I recycle my phone?
Well for a start, your old mobile phone harbours many harmful substances which, when disposed of incorrectly, can cause harm to the environment. If you throw your phone into the general waste then the toxic materials can leak from the landfill into local water sources, impacting on local wildlife. Alternatively if the waste is combusted then those substances could be release into the atmosphere and contribute to pollution.
