Green Energy
What is green energy?
Green energy is generally accepted as electricity sourced from renewable green energy resources such as hydro energy, solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy and bio fuels. These resources are set to directly replace the energy currently sourced from burning non-renewable forms of energy such as coal, petroleum and natural gas
Although electricity does have an alternative supply, gas does not have a green option as it is a non-renewable resource. The debate also continues about the use of nuclear fuel as a worthy alternative to traditional forms of fossil fuel energy supply as it is generated from non-renewable resources.
Green energy tariffs
The electricity supplied to the National Grid originates from many different sources so it is extremely difficult to ascertain whether the electricity supplied to your home is from a renewable green energy source or from traditional non-renewable resources. This means that the energy suppliers tend to offer one of the following options to help you do your part for the environment:
Energy matching: The supplier will match all, or some, of your electricity usage by pushing an equivalent amount of 'green' energy directly into the National Grid.
Carbon offsetting: The supplier will 'offset' your carbon footprint (household carbon dioxide emissions) by investing in CO2-reducing projects in the UK or developing nations. These schemes usually involve the planting of trees.
Green fund: The supplier will help fund research for renewable energy projects, or assist in the funding of renewable energy technology, such as solar energy panelling for solar power farms.

Promoting Renewable energy
Choose a green energy plan and you can help to reduce your own impact on the environment and, at the same time, help promote use of renewable forms of energy supply. By switching away from traditional fossil-fuel usage to more sustainable options, you will be doing your bit to increase the attention and accessibility of these forms of energy supply. Recent demand for green energy has seen dual fuel tariffs increase and you can expect this move to green options continue as more and more people look to do their part for the environment.
Are green tariffs available to me?
The green segment of the energy market is increasing all the time and all of the main suppliers now offer green energy tariffs, whilst there are also several new suppliers offering only these types of energy tariff.
