Mortgage lending drops to eight-year low
Total mortgage lending by UK institutions dropped by 15% to an eight-year low in February as banks and mortgage lenders found it increasingly difficult to raise money to for new mortgages.
On average, February is usually the weakest month of the year for mortgage completions with many putting their home-buying aspirations on hold over the winter. The economic downturn has seen this February's lending figures become the lowest in 8years, almost 60 percent lower than Feburary last year.
Last year’s dramatic collapse of Icelandic internet bank Icesave and the UK’s Bradford & Bingley caused many savers to seek the safety of National Savings and Investments. Even reputable building societies have seen cash deposits withdrawn by their members.
The effect of reduced savings is that the banks have less money in the pot to offer on mortgages. Estate agents have reported an increase in interest from potential buyers since early 2009 but few people are actually following through with house buying as it becomes more difficult to find a suitable mortgage.
The chief UK economist at HIS global insight, Howard Archer, believes the mortgage trend will continue. "Many people are likely to be looking at houses pretty casually and will probably be very cautious about committing to buying one in the current deeply worrying economic environment. Consequently, it is still likely to need a real bargain to tempt many buyers into actually buying a house."

UK energy consumers facing bill for National Grid expansion

UK energy customers are facing the prospect of paying the bill for the £4.7bn expansion of the National Grid.
The cost of bringing wind farms and nuclear power stations on to the grid in the next 10 years will require around 1,000 kilometres of new cabling, making it the largest expansion to the network in 50 years.
The changes should move Britain in the direction of low-carbon energy supply and offer renewable energy to around 30% of UK homes by 2020, said the Electricity Networks Strategy Group.
The UK government will not pick up the cost for the expansion so it will fall on UK energy suppliers and their customers to foot the bill. This could mean higher energy bills in the coming years.
The National Grid would bill energy suppliers such as Centrica, EDF and E.ON as they utilise the grid to distribute their energy to their customers.

Universal charger for phones plan
The world's largest mobile phone manufacturers and network operators are giving momentum to the creation of a universal mobile phone charger.
At present most manufacturers simply offer chargers which work only with phones made by the same manufacturer.
Under the plan, the new universal charger will consume around half as much stand-by electricity than current models.
The manufacturers and network operators who have backed the scheme are Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, LG, T-Mobile, Orange, 3, AT&T and Vodafone.
The aim is to offer the universal charger with all new handsets by 2012. There are presently around 30 different charger types available throughout the EU.
A statement by Nokia said: "By supporting this industry initiative on common charging solutions, and enabling consumers to choose if they need a charger with every new device or can re-use existing ones, we can contribute further in improving the industry's environmental footprint."
The charger interface will be USB for all of the chargers. The change comes amid growing pressure from the EU for manufacturers to produce a standardised charger.
The overall aim is to reduce the thousands of handsets thrown away each year when people swap mobile phone handsets and manufacturers.

The battery-powered motorcycle
A Californian manufacturer has been showing off the world's fastest electric production motorcycle – the Mission One.
Mission Motors that created the motorbike say the vehicle is capable of reaching 150mph and is now available to interested US bikers.
The founder of the company, Forrest North, began work on the conversion of a petrol-fueled Ducati motorbike into an electric motorcycle.
"As a motorcycle enthusiast and engineer, I knew I could combine my passion for motorcycles with my passion for innovation and create a motorcycle that truly sets a new standard in the perception of electric vehicles," North said at the bike’s launch.
The Mission One bike is powered by lithium-ion batteries – like those in computer laptops and mobile telephones, capable of running for 150 miles between charges, with charging taking approximately 2 hours.
UK bikers and electric vehicle fans will get their first glimpse of the Mission One during a motorbike race on the Isle of Man.
Most of the electric motorbikes in the UK are scooters so this new production model could well become popular amongst those looking for more power in their bike.

China to invest £60bn into energy
China will introduce 580bn yuan (£59.5bn) on enlarging its energy industry through 2009 with plans for new solar and wind-powered electricity generating capacity, along with nuclear and coal-fired power stations.
Those companies owned by the Chinese state were increasing their investment to meet the rising demand and to stimulate economic growth. Ministers were also summoned yesterday to ensure measures were in place to increase awareness about saving energy and efficient use of it in homes and businesses.
China is a nation heavily reliant on cheap coal to provide much of its electricity generation now on a course to reduce its carbon emissions and pollution, particularly in its cities which are engulfed in smog.
The market for wind power in China is one of its fastest growing industries and is second only to the US in this sector. The Global Wind Energy Council recently launched a report that identified China will install capacity equivalent to 122GW by 2020.
